Skate Sharpener

The Ice Centre Pro Shop is a full service pro shop.

We use Blackstone Sharpener, the #1 sharpener of the NHL.

We offer the traditional radius. Sharpening is done on a first come first serve basis. If you have more than one pair, please allow at least 5-10 minutes for each pair.

The Ice Centre Pro Shop is in the repair business. We do anything from replacing holders, fixing eyelets, replace goalie straps and much more.

Hockey

Hockey may be the greatest game on Earth, but it is also one of toughest. The right equipment and the right fit are critical for safety, comfort, and performance.

The purpose of this fitting guide is to highlight what is important in respect to each equipment category.
It is important to note a few things that should NOT guide your purchases:
Price Alone Does Not Make it Right
Many assume that the higher the price of an item, the better the equipment is. There is a correlation, but it is not necessarily perfect. It is true that higher priced merchandise generally can incorporate lighter or stronger materials, but this is no assurance that it is right for the player.
Improper Fit, Ruins Quality
A player’s protection and performance is enhanced more by proper fit than by the underlying quality of the product. While both quality and fit are important, a close fitting low-end helmet will generally protect a player better than an ill-fitting, high-end helmet. A low-end skate that provided good heel lock will outperform a high-end skate that is a size too large.
Size Does Matter
Even ignoring the specific fit of the piece of equipment, what suits a six year old does not suit a seventeen year old. As players age they skate faster, the shots get harder, and the distance to the ice gets longer. As skills rise, there are fewer accidents, but everything happens harder and faster.
All Things Are Not Created Equal. Some equipment is just more important than others. From a safety standpoint, helmets are critical at every age, whereas, for a youth player there are almost no safety reasons to choose one glove over another.

Boot Fitting

The importance of a proper boot fitting shouldn’t be underestimated. It is the first line of defense in making sure that the skater has an enjoyable experience while skating, making it easier for them to not only break in their skates but to also achieve their skating goals within a reasonable amount of time.
Ice Centre Pro Shop is widely known throughout the Rocky Mountain Region for the accuracy of both their stock and custom boot fittings. With over 15 years of experience, it’s no wonder that skaters choose Ice Centre Pro Shop as their first choice when it comes to finding just the right boot for their level of skating.
Anyone may come in during the regular Pro Shop hours for a fitting but may have to wait depending upon our schedule.

Boot and Blade Recommendations

No matter which sport you choose to participate in, having the proper equipment should be your number one priority. Those new to figure skating assume that any pair of skates will work just fine. Nothing could be further from the truth. For help in deciding which boots and blades to choose for your particular level of skating, the Ice Centre Pro Shop has taken a number of factors into consideration and came up with the following recommendations.
 

Keep in mind that these are guidelines that we follow when fitting skaters and that they do not necessarily reflect the opinion of other pro-shops.

Cost

When purchasing figure skates, you will get what you pay for up to a point! After that, knowing which boot and blade to choose may be nothing more than a lateral move at a much higher price. Knowing which blade and/or boots to choose can save skaters hundreds, if not thousands of dollars over the course of their skating career.

Value

Over time, blade manufacturing companies have failed to reinvest their profits into new technology; leaving the doors wide open for others to produce the same and in many instances even better quality blades for much less money, passing the savings along to the pro-shops and down to the skaters themselves.

Product Quality

New computer technology in CNC laser cutting and steel manufacturing has paved the way for more advanced hi-test blades to be produced at a much lesser cost. Paramount SK8S and Ultima are two such companies to have recently made use of such technology; producing lightweight stainless steel blades.

Life Expectancy

Ice conditions, number of times sharpened, level of skating, proper care, fit of boot, blade mounting, and weight all play a role in how long a skaters blades and boots will last.
 

Girls’ feet will grow until about age 13 ½, while boys’ feet may continue to grow until around age 18. Between the ages of 9 and 12, girls will have anywhere from ½ – 1 ½ size growth spurt almost overnight. Friday their skates fit fine, but come Monday morning, they have a hard time getting into their skates. Boys on the other hand can have as many as three growth spurts in one year.

Younger skaters who are just beginning with the basics or beginning freestyle will be able to skate just fine in a skate that is ½ size longer than their exact size measurement. It is not until your reach the intermediate freestyle level and above that a much more accurate fit is required.
